Successful virtual event organized by the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden and the CU working groups “Multi-Material Design”, “Tool & Mold Making”, “Additive Manufacturing” and “Smart Structures”, as well as the CU Ost cluster<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following the two international TFP workshops held at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden (Leibniz-Institut f\u00fcr Polymerforschung Dresden e. V. – IPF) in 2012 and 2016, the IPF organized the first virtual CU Innovation Day “Tailored Structures” together with Composites United (CU) on April 5, 2022. The aim of the event was to bring together and network mainly academic players in the field of stress-tailored structural or lightweight material design. As the topic of structural optimization of variable-axis fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) composites continues to gain in importance, with particular regard to the application of the Tailored Fiber Placement (TFP) process, the audience ranged from sports equipment manufacturers to aircraft manufacturers and was extremely well represented. During the presentations, there were always more than 70 international guests in the virtual conference room.<\/p>\n

The 11 presenters themselves came from five different countries and spanned 16 time zones. Thus, the symposium started early with guests from Israel and Japan, continued with presentations from Germany over lunch, and concluded in the afternoon Central European Time with presentations from Canada and the West Coast of the United States, respectively. After a two-year delay due to the pandemic, an extremely suitable online platform was found in MixUp.World, which offered playful opportunities for both lecture presentations and group discussions and individual networking. A follow-up event of the Innovation Day in cooperation of CU and IPF with a focus on suitable generative, variable-axis fiber-plastic composite manufacturing processes is already being planned.<\/p>\n
